Who am I?
My name is Ben Kitchen. I’m now based in the Canadian province of Ontario and work as a freelance, self-employed writer. I produce blogs, articles, website copy and books (fiction and non-fiction) for a wide range of clients, although my qualifications mean I specialise in the automotive industry.
I’m originally from the West Midlands in England, and I’ve been writing since I was little. In 2016, I began my professional career, crafting content on a volunteer basis for Motor Verso. In 2018, I started working towards my IMI Level 2 qualification in Light Vehicle Maintenance, before spending some time working in a local fast-fit garage.
When the Covid lockdowns struck in early 2020, I decided to combine my skills in mechanics and writing, committing to becoming an automotive author. Since then, my workload has grown exponentially. I have been published on many car-based websites and magazines, including Auto Chimps, Motor Verso and the Reliant Motor Club, with both ghostwriting and credited work.
As my projects expand, I have delved into many other fields, producing blog posts, website copy and non-fiction books. These have covered areas such as sustainable living, modern history, local trades, property, games and off-roading.
I’ll do whatever it takes to ensure an article is top-quality. Sometimes, this involves hours of research around a topic for just one blog. I’ve also produced diagrams and other informational pieces, using my own photos and videos (with help from media editor contacts) to bring a personal touch to everything I produce.
All internet-based copy, blogs and articles I produce are SEO-focused (but without ever ‘keyword stuffing’!). This involves some selective wording, internal and external links, and photos and video embeds – all where appropriate. In my experience, the most important long-term strategy for high ranking in search engines is high-quality, easy-to-read and straight-to-the-point content.
Please note that I specifically use the title ‘author’ or ‘writer’ rather than journalist. I don’t usually produce regular news articles (except as one-offs).
If you’d like to get in touch regarding some work, please don’t hesitate! I’m always happy to have a friendly, commitment-free chat to learn about you and what I can do for you.
Topics, Fields and Experience
Please find below a few of the topics and fields I’ve worked in.
Automotive (Mechanical)
Most of my work is based in the automotive field. As a qualified light vehicle technician with experience in the industry, I draw on my knowledge to produce high-quality, engaging pieces.
How does an internal combustion engine work? Are oil changes and keeping your tires topped up really as important as mechanics say? (Yes.) And is Fast and Furious a realistic, factually-accurate representation of automotive design, mechanical tinkering and “precision driving”? (No.)
I write about all this (and much, much more).
Property Problems
After having written for a client for over two years, I’ve become extremely familiar with the types of problems plaguing homeowners (particularly in the UK, although most are applicable around the world). These have included detailed research and blogs on the following:
- Subsidence
- Invasive plant species (Japanese Knotweed)
- Finances and mortgages
- Damp, rot, mould, decay, and similar fungal issues
- Subsidence and foundations
- And more
Historical Pieces
After a fascination with history growing up and throughout school, I produce media based on history, specialising in the first half of the twentieth century and the two World Wars, in particular.
I also, however, research all different time periods and work on articles for many clients covering a wide range of styles and civilisations.
I have written – and am available to write – website articles, magazine pieces and entire books, usually as a ghostwriter.
Homesteading and Tiny Living
I spend over half the year living in a tiny home on a farm/homestead in Canada. We aren’t completely self-sufficient, but we do grow our own food, raise chickens, cut firewood, and so on. This lifestyle is fascinating, tiring, exciting, depressing, and everything in between.
I love contributing my experiences towards blogs. I’m especially interested in looking back at what I’ve done in several years’ time. No doubt I’ll laugh at myself – hard.
Fields
I have written articles in the fields mentioned below, along with many more. I’m also always open to new and exciting projects and ideas!
